Music
Making music is like breathing at University UMC. From the enthusiastic voices of the children in Vacation Bible School to the harmonies of the adult choirs and the skill of the instrumentalists, music is all around us.
"Singing and listening to music always lifts my spirit to the Lord."
MUSIC AT UUMC
There are wonderful opportunities for you to be a part of the music program at UUMC!
Chancel Choir
Our Chancel Choir sings a wide variety of music almost weekly in worship from September - May. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7:30 (rehearsals for Fall begin September 9 - babysitting will be available!) and Sunday mornings at 10:00 both in the church dining room. At one choir member says "Being in the Chancel Choir is as much fun and fellowship as it is preparation and commitment. We sing together, pray for each other, and get to know one another in a more personal setting". Contact Music Director Henry Glass at
jean.henry5974@att.net or 961-2968.
Hand Bell Choir
The adult handbell choir is for EVERYONE. The experienced musician will enjoy the camaraderie and awesome musicality of the 4-Octave Schulmerich bells. The non-musician will be immediately impressed with the skills that can be acquired from ringing at just a few rehearsals. The entire group helps teach technique and "music reading". I
f you've never been able to read music, it's a snap with our handbell color coding. Remember, in handbells, you're only responsible for a couple of notes, not an entire score like an orchestra member. You simply need to count the beats until it's your turn to ring your bell. Contact Hand Bell Director Paula Bittle at 314-706-7853.
Covenant Chorus
This Contemporary vocal group sings both accompanied and a cappella. Some members are very accomplished singers while others do not read music well. The skill set required is singing from the heart as a mission outreach. The group typically performs their pieces from memory and performs at other churches (as well as UUMC) and nursing homes in the area. This group has a diverse repertoire from spirituals and gospel arrangements of old favorites, to new works by contemporary composers. Contact director Paula Bittle at 314-706-7853.
Church Orchestra
Do you play an instrument? If so, we would love to have you as part of our Church Orchestra. The Orchestra plays the third Sunday of each month in worship, as well as special services throughout the Advent and Christmas seasons, Easter Sunday, etc. Contact director Bette Welch at
bjwelch@sbcglobal.net.
